THE FINAL QUARTER
Artist: David A. Castro
Reception Saturday, October 25 from 6 -
The gallery is exited to host an exhibit containing mixed media paintings by David A. Castro. The show will run from October 17th through November 30th. The show is entitled, “The Final Quarter”, which is composed of the work he has just finished in his last quarter of school. The paintings are a mixture of thick paints with texture in various shapes allowing the viewer to come up with their own interpretation.
His pieces are like Rorschach tests. Everyone sees different things in them. Some see terrestrial color planes, abstract landscapes and self portraits. “Viewers seem to like to guess what I have placed in these works or what the shapes represent”, says David.
David explains, his art is an expression of the moment, the place in which he is at the moment of creation. He takes an interest in the process as much as the product. His conceptual influences are music, emotions, the materials and textures of the earth. David works with paint among other mediums working abstractly. Each work is a culmination of the moment and the preparation that has brought him to that moment. This can include, the physical act of constructing a canvas in a workshop, driving in the rain the night before the creation, or the artistic critique of an old friend.
He credits his growth in his art to teachers and mentors he has me along the way. They gave him the space and motivation necessary to continue to improve and create.
Art allows David to go back and forth between his two worlds...One is a place of creation and dream. The other is a place of subsistence and work. “Each work is like giving birth...each birth brings a new creation into the world with a life of its own” says David.
David has shown in various venues from a thrift store in Sacrament to the Dilion Ripley Center in the Smithsonian. David is working on a B. A. In fine art and history and has received many awards on his art. He is also the Executive Director of the Arts Council of Tulare County.
